But what exactly is a lotion tissue? Is it wet? Does it contain actual lotion? And is it really different from a regular facial tissue?

What is a lotion facial tissue?

A lotion facial tissue is still a dry facial tissue, but it has been treated or infused with a lotion formulation designed to give the tissue a softer, smoother feel against the skin.

Unlike wet wipes, lotion tissues don't feel wet when you pull them from the pack. You use them just as you would an ordinary facial tissue.

The difference becomes easier to appreciate when you're using tissues repeatedly—particularly around the nose and face, where constant rubbing can become uncomfortable.

So, are lotion tissues wet?

No.

This is probably one of the easiest misconceptions to have when you first hear the term "lotion tissue."

A lotion facial tissue is not a wet wipe. It remains dry to the touch and is intended for normal facial tissue use.

The "lotion" refers to the formulation incorporated into the tissue to help create that smoother, more comfortable feel.

Lotion tissues vs regular facial tissues: what's the difference?

A regular facial tissue can be perfectly suitable for everyday use. But not all tissues are made the same way.

The type of pulp, number of plies, tissue structure and finishing treatments can all influence how a tissue feels.

With a lotion tissue, an additional lotion treatment is used specifically to enhance the tactile experience.

That difference may not seem particularly important when you're using one tissue.

Use ten or twenty because of a runny nose, though, and softness starts to matter a lot more.

What should you look for in a lotion facial tissue?

Softness is important, but it shouldn't be the only consideration.

A good everyday facial tissue should balance softness with strength. If a tissue feels lovely but falls apart too easily during use, that's not particularly helpful either.

A few things worth looking at include:

Ply and construction. Multiple layers can help provide both cushioning and strength, although more plies don't automatically guarantee a better tissue.

The lotion formulation. Different brands use different approaches, so it's worth understanding what gives the tissue its softer finish.

The pulp. The quality of the fibre itself plays an important role in the overall feel and performance of a tissue.

Responsible sourcing. If sustainability matters to you, look for recognized sourcing certifications such as FSC.

The format. A large pack beside the bed serves a very different purpose from something small enough to carry in your handbag.

Are lotion facial tissues worth trying?
